Amavasya is also known as Amavasi. It occurs every month in Hindu calendar, so there are 12 new moon days in a year. Amavasya is a day that marks the beginning of Shukla Paksha. Most of the Hindus observe a fast on the Amavasya day and offer food to their ancestors As per the Vishnu Dharm Shastra.
