Significance of Mahashivratri | Mahashivratri 2021

Mahashivratri

It is the day of Lord Shiva, one of the most significant and holy of all days for all the Hindus throughout the world. It is a day to celebrate the Shiva Tattva by reflecting deep within oneself.

Mahashivaratri, it is to congregate Shiva and Shakti the divine masculine and feminine energies that are the core of this very existence.

The chaturdashitithi during Krishna Paksha in the month of Magha, is known as ‘MahaShivaratri’, as per the North Indian calendar. MahaShivratri unlike any other Hindu festival is a more earnest as it is marked with internal reflection and introspection.

It is of utmost importance for spiritual seekers as it is a night of awakening.

Why is it celebrated?

Many reasons are believed to have given rise to this pious occasion:

  1. It’s the day when Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati got married.
  2. After the “Samudra Manthan” Lord Siva drank all the poison that was obtained from churning the ocean. So in order to honor him this day is celebrated.
  3. It is also believed that on this very day Goddess Ganga was released from his matted locks onto earth as a holy river.
  4. The formless God Sadashiv appeared infront of Lingodhbhav Moorthi at midnight, hence people tend to stay awake all night long and offer prayers and meditate.

In devotion of Lord Shiva the following things are done:

  1. Fasting
  2. Prayer and Meditation.
  3. Chanting of the “Om Namah Shivaya” mantra.
  4. Worshipping the Shivalinga by offering bailpatra, dhatura, ber and milk.
  5. Attending Mahashivratri or Rudra Puja.

It indeed is a very special night to show our devotion and love to our revered Mahadev and receive his blessings.
