What is NavamiShraddha?
NavamiShraddha is the ninth day of MahalayPaksha or PitruPaksha. This Shraddha is also known as MatraNavami, NavmiShraddha and AvidhavaShraddha.
According to the Hindu calendar, NavamiShraddha falls on the Navamitithi of the Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month. As per the North Indian Amavasyant Calendar, NavamiShraddha falls in the month of Ashwin.
NavamiShradh is performed for those who died on the NavamiTithi as per the Hindu calendar. Deceased may have died in either fortnight i.e. ShuklaPaksha or Krishna Paksha. In 2018, the date of NavamiShraddha is 3rd October on Wednesday.
This Shraddhatithi is the most suitable day to perform mother’s Shraddha. NavamiShraddha is mainly performed to pacify the souls of the dead females. Apart from Shraddha rituals, Durga puja is also performed on this day.

Rituals of NavamiShraddha
- Navami Shraddha rituals involve offering tarpan to the ancestors. It is a way of giving respect and tribute to one’s ancestors.
- After the tarpan, PindDaan is performed.
- After the completion of all the rituals, the food is offered to a Brahmin.
- You have to give the food to crow or cow.
- “Daan” is also done on the NavamiShraddha for the deceased family member who dies on this tithi.
