According to the Hindu calendar, Amavasya is an important day. On Amavasya, the moon is not visible in the sky that’s why it is also known as New moon day or No moon day. Amavasya is also known as Amavasi. It occurs every month in Hindu calendar, so there are 12 new moon days in a year. Amavasya is a day that marks the beginning of Shukla Paksha. Most of the Hindus observe a fast on the Amavasya day and offer food to their ancestors As per the Vishnu Dharm Shastra. It is believed that if you offer Shraddh rituals to your ancestors, it gives them peace. There are twelve Amavasya days in a year.
