The Rameshwaram Temple, Tamil Nadu is one of the most famous temples that form a part of the popular “Char Dham” designated to Hindu pilgrimage. The Hindus also regard the Rameshwaram Temple, Tamil Nadu Prasad as the most sacred offering. This Temple was built in the 12th century by the Pandya dynasty. Lord Rama, Goddess Sita and Lord Hanuman are worshipped here.
This Temple was built at places wherever the Ravana worshipped Lord Shiva. The temple is one of the 12 sacred jyotirlingams. The legend goes that Lord Rama after killing Ravana repented and wanted to wash off His sins as He was a Brahmin and hence they made a Lingam out of sand and worshipped Lord Shiva here and hence the Rameshwaram Temple is named after him.
