The Kamakhya Devi Temple, Guwahati, Assam is one of the most famous temples designated to Goddess Shakti who is supposedly a progeny of Lord Shiva’s mind. Kamakhya Devi is said to be an incarnation of Goddess Kali. The story behind this temple is that when Sati threw herself unto fire, lord Shiva was so grieved and in rage that he carried the corpse on his shoulder and began his Tandava. He vowed to not stop unless the body had fully rotted. In the process, 51 pieces of the body fell on some points. These spots are called the Shaktipeeths as per the Hindu mythology. The Kamakhya temple is built at the spot where the “yoni” had fallen.
